Tom Clancyโ€™s Jack Ryan: Ghost War review: John Krasinski leads this slick action-packed espionage thriller that delivers solid action but offers very little new to the genre.

Cast: John Krasinski, Sienna Miller, Wendell Pierce, Michael Kelly
Director: Andrew Bernstein
Language: English

There is absolutely no denying that Tom Clancyโ€™s Jack Ryan: Ghost War knows exactly what kind of film it wants to be. Loud action sequences? Check. Brotherhood and emotional bonding amidst warfare? Check. Helicopter entries, cars bursting into flames, long chase sequences through crowded streets, secret missions, betrayals and men carrying giant guns while running through collapsing buildings? Also check.

The problem, however, is that we have seen all of this before. Multiple times.

That perhaps becomes the biggest issue with Ghost War. While the film is undoubtedly slick and entertaining in parts, there is very little that feels genuinely new about it. It treads on a path that spy thrillers have walked a little too often over the years, making the overall viewing experience feel more familiar than exciting.

Now, that does not mean the film is boring. Far from it. In fact, the action sequences are genuinely well filmed and choreographed. The film moves at a brisk enough pace to keep your attention intact, and there are several moments where it does manage to keep you on the edge of your seat. Especially during the combat sequences and chase scenes, the technical finesse is visible.

But somewhere beneath all the explosions and chaos, the predictability begins creeping in.

The pacing, too, feels uneven at points, though surprisingly, that is not even the filmโ€™s biggest issue. One of the most repetitive aspects of the film is its treatment of the Middle East setting itself. The moment the team heads to Dubai, the film immediately falls back on the same overly familiar โ€œArabicโ€ background score that Hollywood action films have been using for years. It feels generic, dated and painfully overused at this point.

And Indian audiences, in particular, will definitely notice another glaring issue- Hindi being casually passed off as Urdu during a major sequence. It becomes distracting, especially forย  viewers who can immediately tell the difference.

Performance-wise though, John Krasinski comfortably remains the strongest part of the film. As Jack Ryan, Krasinski slips back into the role with ease, carrying the emotional and physical burden of the narrative convincingly. He gets the meatiest role here, and to his credit, he does justice to it. More importantly, the film feels like a very
spontaneous continuation of the television series rather than a disconnected extension of the franchise.

Sienna Miller is good in her part and honestly, it is always a treat watching her onscreen. Meanwhile, Wendell Pierce once again brings warmth and sincerity as CIA chief Greer. At this point, it almost feels impossible to imagine a
_Jack Ryan_ story without him. Pierce carries the role with an understated vulnerability that quietly grounds the film emotionally amidst all the action-heavy chaos.

Ultimately, Tom Clancyโ€™s Jack Ryan: Ghost War is a decent one-time watch. It delivers exactly what fans of the franchise would expect- action, espionage and emotional camaraderie. However, but it never really goes beyond that. It is polished, watchable and occasionally thrilling, but also painfully safe.

For a genre that has already exhausted most of its tropes, Ghost War unfortunately does little to reinvent the wheel.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars.
