Former India footballer Bhaichung Bhutia has praised the Durand Cup as a prestigious competition and welcomed efforts to widen its reach. Expressing hope that major clubs will take part with backing from the Bengal government, Bhutia urged the organisers to bring a group-stage fixture to Siliguri, highlighting the city’s deep-rooted connection to the sport.

Speaking to reporters, he described the event as a landmark in world football and called on the authorities to consider Siliguri as a host venue to give local fans a taste of the action.

The 135th edition of the Durand Cup kicks off on July 25 with a high-profile opening fixture between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal FC in the iconic Kolkata Derby. Running through to August 23, the month-long tournament features 24 teams divided into six groups, bringing together India’s top clubs, armed forces sides, emerging academies, and international entrants. 

Matches will be spread across five host cities: Kolkata, Ranchi, Imphal, Shillong, and Guwahati. Kolkata remains the nerve centre of the event, playing host to Groups A and B, the opening match, two quarter-finals, a semi-final, and the final.
