US envoy suggests replacing Iran with Italy at FIFA World Cup’26

Amid rising geopolitical tensions, a US special envoy has suggested that Iran be replaced by Italy in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Paolo Zampolli, a US special envoy and Italian native, has proposed to President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino that Italy take Iranโ€™s place in the tournament.

โ€œI confirm I have suggested to Trump and [FIFA president Gianni] Infantino that Italy replace Iran at the World Cup,โ€ Zampolli said.

ย

โ€œIโ€™m an Italian native, and it would be a dream to see the Azzurri at a US-hosted tournament. With four titles, they have the pedigree to justify inclusion.โ€

Iran has previously stated that it is fully prepared to participate in the tournament, which runs from 11 June to 19 July 2026. However, due to the current political situation between Iran and the United States, the Iranian side requested that its group’s matches be moved from the US to Mexico. FIFA has rejected this request.

Iran is drawn in Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. Its three group matches are scheduled to take place in Seattle and Los Angeles.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said last week that Iran is expected to participate in the World Cup. In March, US President Donald Trump stated that while Iranโ€™s team would be welcome, he questioned whether it would be appropriate for them to attend because of concerns over their โ€œlife and safety”, without providing further details.
