Treesa, Gayatri withdraw from Uber Cup Finals

Indian womenโ€™s doubles pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand have withdrawn from the upcoming Uber Cup Finals after Treesa suffered an ankle injury, dealing a setback to Indiaโ€™s campaign in Denmark.

ย

India is set to compete in the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals in Horsens, Denmark, scheduled from April 24 to May 3.ย โ€œTreesa sadly twisted her ankle just 2โ€“3 days before leaving for the Badminton Asia Championships. It was an accident during trainingโ€”she stepped on her partnerโ€™s foot,โ€ India doubles coach B. Sumeeth Reddy said.

ย

โ€œShe is currently resting and will undergo rehabilitation. It is not a major injury, and she is expected to recover in around four weeks. She is likely to return at the Singapore Open at the end of May,โ€ he added.

ย

The pair had also withdrawn from the Swiss Open last month due to Treesaโ€™s shoulder issue. In Basel, they were trailing Chinese Taipeiโ€™s Hu Ling Fang and Jheng Yu Chieh in their opening round match when they retired mid-game.

ย

โ€œIn doubles, such minor issues can happen. She had a shoulder problem earlier, but is fine now,โ€ Sumeeth said. In their absence, the Badminton Association of India (BAI) has named Shruti Mishra and Priya Konjengbam as replacements.

ย

Shruti and Priya, the 2023 Senior National champions, are currently ranked 48th in the world. They were also part of the Indian squad that clinched gold at the 2024 Badminton Asia Team Championships.

Meanwhile, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who played a key role in Indiaโ€™s 2022 Thomas Cup triumph, will travel early to Denmark to begin preparatory training ahead of the tournament.

ย

โ€œThey want to train in Denmark for a few days before the tournament. They will leave tomorrow,โ€ Sumeeth said.ย The world No. 4 pair had earlier withdrawn from the Swiss Open quarterfinals in March due to a shoulder injury to Satwiksairaj and also skipped the Badminton Asia Championships earlier this week.

Indiaโ€™s menโ€™s and womenโ€™s teams are placed in Group A for the tournament.

ย

The menโ€™s team, champions in 2022, are grouped with defending champions China, Canada and Australia.ย The womenโ€™s team will face defending champions and 16-time winners China, hosts Denmark and Ukraine.
