Rahane’s batting role under scrutiny

Ajinkya Rahane appears to be operating in a ‘bubble’ at the moment, a situation often seen with experienced Indian players who tend to shut out external criticism, even when performance issues become difficult to ignore.

The term ‘bubble’ here refers to an insulating mind-set that blocks outside noise—often meaning valid criticism that players or teams prefer not to engage with. While several franchises have had poor starts in the IPL, few have looked as unsettled as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), with questions being raised about both leadership and batting approach.

Modern T20 cricket has evolved rapidly, with young aggressive batters like Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ayush Mhatre and Priyansh Arya redefining power-hitting standards. Against this backdrop, Rahane’s more traditional style is being viewed as increasingly outdated.

At 37, Rahane is being seen as struggling to adapt to the fast-changing demands of T20 cricket. Critics argue his technique, built over two decades of classical batting, is proving difficult to reshape for modern strike rates and high-tempo scoring.

Questions are now being raised not just about his captaincy, but even about his place in the playing XI as a specialist batter. In five matches this season, Rahane has managed just seven sixes and eight boundaries, a low output for a top-order batter operating in the powerplay or at No. 3. His strike rate, below 150, is being viewed as insufficient in today’s IPL environment.

While such numbers may have been acceptable in earlier eras of T20 cricket, analysts say they now paint a worrying picture for a former India Test captain with extensive international experience.

Rahane’s continued presence is also being described as a case of ‘TINA’ (There Is No Alternative), with KKR lacking strong immediate replacements. His deputy Rinku Singh is also out of form, leaving the team management with limited options.

Among the few leadership alternatives is Rovman Powell, who has experience captaining the West Indies in international T20s and ODIs. However, his leadership record remains modest, making the transition uncertain.

KKR’s top-order concerns are further highlighted by the presence of young batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who has been their most consistent scorer with 182 runs at a strike rate of 155, yet the team has struggled to get strong starts in the powerplay, including in their recent match at Chepauk.

The overall structure of the squad and selection strategy has also come under scrutiny, with questions being raised about the planning by team management, including CEO Venky Mysore and coach Abhishek Nayar.

Even if Rahane is dropped, concerns remain about the lack of high-quality Indian backup options capable of immediately changing the tempo of matches. One young name mentioned with promise is Tejasvi Dahiya of Delhi.

Overall, the situation for KKR appears increasingly difficult, with Rahane’s form and the team’s lack of alternatives combining to leave their campaign in a worrying downward trajectory.
