Former India batter Cheteshwar Pujara believes Ravindra Jadeja has undergone a remarkable transformation as a Test bowler, evolving from a primarily defensive operator into a genuine wicket-taking threat. According to Pujara, the all-rounder’s shift in mindset has played a major role in cementing his reputation as one of the finest all-rounders in modern-day Test cricket.

Jadeja is set to return to India’s Test side for the two-match series against Sri Lanka beginning on August 15 after missing the one-off Test against Afghanistan. His comeback comes at an important stage of India’s World Test Championship campaign, with crucial series against New Zealand and Australia also scheduled later in the cycle.

Pujara reflected on Jadeja’s growth over the years and explained how a change in mentality has made him a far more dangerous bowler in all conditions.
“Earlier, when Ravindra Jadeja bowled in Test cricket, his main objective was to keep the scoring rate under control,” Pujara said. “If the pitch offered assistance, he naturally looked to take wickets, but on flatter surfaces his priority was to build pressure by conceding very few runs. That approach has changed significantly.”

Pujara noted that Jadeja now enters every spell with the intention of dismissing batters rather than simply containing them. The left-arm spinner consistently attacks the stumps, forcing batters to play at almost every delivery and increasing the chances of producing mistakes.

“Now he understands his strengths much better,” Pujara explained. “Every ball he bowls has the purpose of taking a wicket. He attacks the stumps, varies his angles, uses the crease more effectively and adjusts his length depending on the batter. That mental shift has elevated his bowling to another level.”

The veteran batter added that Jadeja’s improved tactical awareness has allowed him to become more proactive rather than reactive. Instead of waiting for conditions to favour him, the spinner now creates opportunities through intelligent planning, subtle variations and relentless accuracy.

Jadeja’s career numbers underline his immense value to the Indian team. In 89 Test matches, the left-arm spinner has claimed 348 wickets at an impressive average of 25.11. His record includes 15 five-wicket hauls, 17 four-wicket hauls and three match hauls of ten wickets, with career-best figures of 7 for 42.
Equally effective with the bat, Jadeja has scored 4,095 runs in 133 Test innings at an average of 38.27, including six centuries and eight half-centuries. His ability to contribute in both departments has made him one of India’s most dependable performers across different conditions.

The upcoming Sri Lanka series will mark the beginning of an important phase in Jadeja’s Test career. Following the two-match contest, India are scheduled to tour New Zealand for two Tests before hosting Australia in a high-profile five-Test series. Jadeja will also be aiming to achieve another significant milestone during this period, needing just 52 more wickets to become only the fifth Indian bowler to reach the landmark of 400 Test wickets.

Jadeja last represented India in Test cricket during the series against South Africa in November last year. Although he endured a relatively quiet campaign by his own lofty standards, picking up 25 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 38.20, the experienced all-rounder will be eager to rediscover his best form during the Sri Lanka tour.

India currently occupy fifth place in the World Test Championship standings, having recorded four victories and four defeats in nine matches for a points percentage of 48.15. With several challenging assignments ahead, the return of an experienced campaigner like Jadeja is expected to strengthen both India’s bowling attack and lower-order batting as the team looks to climb the WTC table.
