KKR search for answers; Gujarat Titans eye first home win

Under-pressure Kolkata Knight Riders will look to stop their slide when they face a confident Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League on Friday. Led by captain Ajinkya Rahane and coach Abhishek Nayar, KKR have endured a difficult start, losing four of their first five matches and still searching for their maiden win of the season.

Their bowling unit has been weakened even before the tournament due to injuries to Harshit Rana and Akash Deep, along with the exit of Mustafizur Rahman following BCCI directives.

ย

A bigger concern has been the poor form of spin spearheads Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy, with the latter yet to take a wicket this season.
KKRโ€™s issues have been further highlighted by questionable tactical calls on and off the field. The exclusion of players such as Tim Seifert and Rachin Ravindra has drawn criticism, while decisions after winning the toss have also come under scrutiny.

In a rain-hit game against Punjab Kings, Rahane surprised many by opting to bat first, while against Chennai Super Kings he chose to bowl on a surface that favoured batting conditions. Their season began with a failed defence of 220 against Mumbai Indians, followed by a heavy 65-run defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad at home.

Since then, KKR have appeared unsettled and short of direction. Much attention has also been on all-rounder Cameron Green, bought for Rs 25.20 crore to replace Andre Russell, but he has managed only 56 runs in five innings and has had limited impact with the ball.

The batting order has also lacked clarity, with Sunil Narine promoted to open in the chase of 193, while Rahane dropped to No. 3โ€”moves that failed as KKR were restricted to 160/7 against CSK.

Experienced domestic players such as Manish Pandey, Rahul Tripathi and Sarthak Ranjan have also remained on the bench, adding to selection debates.ย KKR will now look to regroup quickly, drawing inspiration from past comeback stories such as Mumbai Indiansโ€™ turnaround in 2015 after a poor start.

Gujarat Titans, meanwhile, are still searching for their first home win after losing their only match in Ahmedabad against Rajasthan Royals, but have since bounced back with two impressive away victories.

Their bowling attack looks settled, with Prasidh Krishna performing well in the middle and death overs, while Rashid Khan has rediscovered his rhythm.
With captain Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler finding form, Gujarat Titans head into the contest with better balance and growing confidence.
The match begins at 7:30 pm.
