U.S. to close consulate in Pakistan’s Peshawar citing safety concerns

The United States will close its consulate โ€Œin Pakistanโ€™s Peshawar, citing the safety of its โ diplomats, the State Department said in a statement published โ€Œon Tuesday (May 5, 2026).

The U.S. embassy in Islamabad โ€Œwill handle โ€Œall โ diplomatic engagement with Khyber โ Pakhtunkhwa province, where Peshawar is the capital, the State Department said.

โ€œThis decision โ€Œreflects our commitment to the safety of our diplomatic personnel and โ€Œefficient resource management,โ€ the statement said.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa borders Afghanistan, and has โ seen attacks and fierce fighting between Pakistan forces โ€Œand what Islamabad says are Afghan-backed militants.
