FIFA has begun an investigation into an on-pitch brawl between Argentina and Spanish players after the conclusion of the World Cup Final in New Jersey in the United States.

Spain were crowned world champions for the second time in 16 years after beating Argentina 1-0 in extra time.

The probe was confirmed by the global governing body, saying its disciplinary committee assessed match reports of the multi-player brawl which resulted in an ugly end to a heated match that was decided in extra time.

FIFA’s disciplinary committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC with regard to the post-match incidents, it said in a statement.

Spain’s World Cup-winning celebrations were marred by ugly scenes after Argentina players resorted to physical assault on the Spanish players.

While Lamine Yamal was seen praising God for the victory, others behind him appeared to be engaged in what would become an embarrassing moment for the global sport.

Argentina defender Leandro Paredes shoved Spain’s Eric García by the throat, and when Spanish substitute player Gavi jumped in to intervene, Paredes pushed him to the ground.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni rushed to the centre of the field to separate the players, only for Paredes to push more Spanish players before he was physically pulled back by a teammate.

Once loved by all for their brilliant football, Team Argentina became one of the most hated teams, with some international experts describing them as a team of street fighters rather than footballers.

While a few players from both sides greeted each other after the match — most noticeably, there was a warm embrace between Yamal and Argentine captain Lionel Messi — the overall atmosphere remained bitter between the two finalists.
