The FIFA World Cup 2026 will kick off on Thursday despite recent global tensions, as the three host nations — the United States, Canada and Mexico — put the final touches on preparations for the biggest sporting event on the planet.

The tournament opens at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, with co-hosts Mexico facing South Africa at 3:00 pm local time (1900 GMT).

This edition is expected to be the last for global football icons Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

The World Cup remains one of the few major sporting events held only once every four years, retaining its unique prestige.

England captain Harry Kane, who has been in scintillating form, will be hoping to lead his country to World Cup glory and end England’s 60-year wait for the trophy.

Questions surrounding the tournament will be answered over the coming weeks. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has described the event as “the greatest show that the planet has ever seen”.

However, the tournament has faced significant backlash over soaring ticket prices, hotel rates and accommodation costs.

Many fans and observers have criticised the affordability of the event.

The most expensive ticket for the 2022 World Cup final was around $1,600 at face value. In contrast, the highest-priced face value ticket for the 2026 final is an eye-watering $32,970.
