Emotive call for Bihar state’s own IPL team grows louder

For years, Bihar has watched the Indian Premier League from the sidelines, cheering for stars from other states while carrying the silent hope that one day, its own name would echo under the bright lights of cricket’s grandest stage. Now, that emotion has found a voice.

Just four years ago, the IPL welcomed two new franchises — Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants — expanding the league’s footprint across India. Yet Bihar, one of the country’s most populous and cricket-passionate states, still waits for its moment of recognition.

Industrialist and Rajya Sabha MP Anil Agarwal stirred emotions across the state after strongly backing the idea of an IPL team for Bihar. In an emotional post on X written in Hindi, Agarwal reminded the nation that Bihar has never lacked talent, only opportunities.

He pointed to the rise of stars like Ishan Kishan from Patna, who smashed one of the fastest ODI double centuries in cricket history, teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi from Samastipur, who became one of the youngest IPL debutants, and Sakib Hussain from Gopalganj, whose journey from a modest background to the IPL has inspired countless youngsters.

“The soil of Bihar has given India extraordinary cricketers,” Agarwal wrote, before asking the question millions in the state have silently carried for years: “Why has Bihar still not received the recognition and identity in cricket that it truly deserves?”

For Bihar, cricket has often been more than just a sport. It has been a dream battling against poor infrastructure, lack of facilities and years of neglect. There was a time when the state did not even have proper cricketing representation. Young players grew up chasing impossible dreams on dusty grounds, hoping talent alone would be enough.

Agarwal said his dream is to ensure Bihar’s youth receive world-class facilities and the support needed to compete with the best in the country. He expressed confidence that if given the right platform, Bihar’s players could build a team capable of making the entire world proud.

“But for me, Bihar is not just a state — it is an emotion,” he wrote passionately. And perhaps that is why the demand for an IPL team means so much more here. For millions of Biharis, it is not merely about cricket. It is about identity, pride, belonging and finally being seen on India’s biggest sporting stage.
