Chennai Super Kings have suffered a major setback after young batter Ayush Mhatre sustained a hamstring tear during their Indian Premier League match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, a injury described by the team management as “pretty bad”.

The 18-year-old, who came in as an impact substitute, was seen in visible discomfort while attempting a run during CSK’s 10-run defeat at Hyderabad on Saturday. He immediately clutched his hamstring and required on-field medical attention.

“Obviously a hamstring tear. I don’t know how bad it is. I’m sure we’ll scan him probably tomorrow or the next day,” CSK batting coach Mike Hussey said after the match.

Hussey added that Mhatre will undergo scans to determine the severity of the injury, with the recovery timeline still unclear. A hamstring tear can typically take several weeks to several months to heal depending on its grade.

“It looks pretty bad, unfortunately. And he’s going to be a big, big loss because he’s been in really nice touch for us,” Hussey said.

Mhatre has been one of CSK’s standout performers this season, scoring 201 runs at a strike rate of 177.87, providing crucial impetus at the top of the order.

Despite the setback, Hussey said the injury could open up opportunities for other squad members. “It’s going to give someone else an opportunity. We’ve got some really good players who haven’t been able to get a chance,” he said.

“So as much as we’re disappointed to lose Ayush, it’s exciting for a new player to come in and get a chance.”

CSK, the five-time champions, are currently placed seventh on the points table with two wins from six matches. They next face Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on April 23
