CSK rejects reports of signing MI skipper Pandya as ‘speculation’

The IPL off-season has barely begun, but the rumour mill is already in overdrive. One of the biggest stories doing the rounds suggested that Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya could be on his way to Chennai Super Kings in a blockbuster move ahead of IPL 2027. However, CSK has wasted little time in shutting down the speculation.

The senior management of the five-time IPL champions have categorically denied any interest in signing Pandya, insisting there have been no discussions, formal or informal, with either the player or Mumbai Indians. The franchise described the reports as “baseless”, putting an end to one of the most sensational transfer rumours of the season.

The speculation gained momentum after Mumbai Indians endured a disastrous IPL 2026 campaign, finishing at the bottom of the points table. It was another disappointing season under Pandya’s leadership, with MI managing just one playoff appearance in the last three editions. Their struggles inevitably sparked questions over the franchise’s future direction and whether a major overhaul, including Pandya’s departure, could be on the cards.

Despite the growing chatter, sources within CSK have made it clear that the franchise is not exploring the possibility of bringing the India all-rounder to Chennai. The management remains focused on its existing plans rather than entering the trade market for a high-profile acquisition.

The timing of the rumours also coincides with CSK’s commitments in Major League Cricket. The franchise owns the Texas Super Kings, and several key members of the management and leadership group are currently in the United States overseeing the team’s campaign. As a result, there have been no internal discussions regarding IPL player movements.

Reports had also linked Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals with a possible move for Pandya. However, there appears to be little substance to those claims as well. Mumbai Indians are understood to be committed to their long-term plans despite a difficult season and are unlikely to entertain offers for one of their biggest stars.

The franchise is also believed to be investing heavily in its younger core, with players such as Riyan Parag expected to play a significant role in its future plans. While IPL trade rumours often dominate the off-season, those close to the developments believe there is little chance of a blockbuster move involving Pandya before IPL 2027.

For now, the speculation remains just that. CSK has distanced itself from the reports, Mumbai Indians have shown no indication of putting Pandya on the trade table, and one of the biggest transfer stories of the off-season appears to have fizzled out almost as quickly as it surfaced.
