Colombia edges past Congo 1-0 to reach knockout stage

Daniel Muñoz scored the decisive goal as Colombia edged past Congo 1-0 to secure a place in the knockout stage of the World Cup, overcoming a resilient defensive display and an inspired performance from Congolese goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi.

Muñoz struck in the 76th minute after Colombia had spent much of the match trying to break down Congo’s resistance. The defender latched onto a loose ball inside the penalty area and fired a left-footed effort that took a deflection off a defender, leaving Mpasi with no chance. The goal was Muñoz’s second of the tournament.

Mpasi was instrumental in keeping Congo in the contest for long periods, producing a string of impressive saves, including five difficult stops within the opening 20 minutes. His heroics frustrated the Colombians and ensured the match remained finely balanced deep into the second half.

Congo nearly snatched a dramatic equalizer during stoppage time. Colombia goalkeeper Camilo Vargas first produced an outstanding save to deny a powerful long-range effort from Nathanael Mbuku before reacting brilliantly moments later to stop a close-range header from Chancel Mbemba following the resulting corner.

Colombia thought they had put the game beyond doubt late on through star forward Luis Díaz, but the winger saw two goals ruled out in quick succession. The first was disallowed for a foul in the build-up in the 79th minute, while the second was chalked off for offside just a minute later.

Congo entered the match with confidence after earning a surprise 1-1 draw against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in its opening fixture, marking an encouraging return to the World Cup stage after more than five decades away from the tournament.

The victory leaves Colombia on six points from two matches in Group K. Portugal sits second on four points after thrashing Uzbekistan 5-0 earlier on Tuesday in Houston, with Ronaldo scoring twice. Congo remains on one point, while Uzbekistan is yet to get off the mark.

Colombia now needs only a draw against Portugal in its final group-stage match on Saturday to secure top spot in the group. Such a result would also guarantee Portugal’s progression to the knockout rounds.

Ranked 11th in the world and trailing only Brazil and Argentina among South American nations, Colombia has enjoyed an impressive campaign so far. Los Cafeteros began their tournament with a convincing 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan and have now won both of their opening matches.

For Congo, currently ranked 47th in the world, the buildup to the World Cup was complicated by an Ebola outbreak that disrupted preparations and affected fan travel. Numerous supporters were unable to attend matches because of health-related restrictions and quarantine requirements.

Among those in attendance was Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, a fan who gained widespread recognition during the Africa Cup of Nations for portraying a living statue of Congo’s assassinated independence leader Patrice Lumumba. After missing the opening game due to quarantine measures, he was present in Guadalajara and maintained his trademark statue pose throughout the match.

The contest also continued Colombia’s remarkable World Cup record, as the team has still never been involved in a scoreless draw across its 23 appearances in the tournament.

Meanwhile, veteran playmaker James Rodríguez reached a significant milestone, making his 10th World Cup appearance and joining Colombian legends Freddy Rincón and Carlos Valderrama in achieving the feat.
