Barcelona have reached an agreement in principle with Manchester City to sign star midfielder Rodri, in what is set to become one of the biggest moves of the summer transfer window.

The La Liga champions had previously seen two bids for the Spain international rejected by Manchester City, but returned with an improved third offer over the weekend. The latest proposal is understood to be worth a total package of £76.5 million (USD 65.3 million), with sources confirming that the two clubs have now reached an agreement.

According to reports, the necessary paperwork has already been exchanged and the deal is in the process of being formally completed. Rodri is expected to travel to Barcelona in the coming days, with the club potentially presenting him as a new signing before Wednesday’s Joan Gamper Trophy fixture against Al Ahly at Camp Nou.

The proposed arrival of the 30-year-old midfielder represents a major statement of intent from Barcelona as they look to strengthen a squad that has enjoyed considerable domestic success under manager Hansi Flick.

Rodri was not initially considered a primary target for Barcelona, but the club moved quickly after the midfielder became available. His potential arrival also gained greater importance following a long-term injury to Frenkie de Jong, which has encouraged Barcelona to explore additional options in midfield.

The Spanish midfielder’s experience, tactical intelligence and ability to control the tempo of matches make him an attractive addition to Flick’s side. Rodri has established himself as one of the finest holding midfielders in world football during his spell at Manchester City, where he has played a central role in the club’s success.

Rodri joined Manchester City in 2019 after spells with Villarreal and Atletico Madrid. Since moving to England, he has won four Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League, while also becoming an important figure in Spain’s international setup.

His performances at international level further enhanced his reputation. Rodri played a key role in Spain’s European Championship triumph and was recognised as the Player of the Tournament. His performances during Spain’s successful campaign helped him win the Ballon d’Or in 2024, further underlining his status among the elite players in world football.

Barcelona’s move for Rodri also comes amid reported interest from Real Madrid. The Spanish giants’ arch-rivals had previously explored the possibility of signing the midfielder, but Rodri is understood to have preferred a move to Barcelona.

The Catalan club is also working on strengthening other areas of the squad. Fullback Joao Cancelo is reportedly set to return, while Barcelona are also looking to add a striker following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres. Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez has emerged as one of the names being considered.
