While the series featured a near full-strength Indian side, the performances fell well below expectations, raising serious questions over the future of several fringe players.

The defeat followed an equally disappointing T20I series, making the England tour one to forget for the Men in Blue. With major ICC tournaments on the horizon, the selectors are expected to place greater emphasis on consistency and match-winning performances, leaving little room for players who failed to make an impact.

Among those under the scanner is spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar. Considered one of India’s most dependable utility cricketers, Sundar could not justify his selection in the ODI series. He featured in two matches, scoring an unbeaten 52 in one innings before managing just two runs in the next. More significantly, his primary role as a spinner yielded no wickets, reducing his overall impact on the contest.

Pace-bowling all-rounder Shivam Dube also endured a forgettable campaign. Although he has established himself as a T20 specialist, the ODI series offered him an opportunity to strengthen his credentials in the 50-over format. Instead, he struggled with the bat, including a first-ball dismissal, while his two wickets across two matches failed to compensate for his lack of contribution with the bat.

Another player whose place could come under scrutiny is wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan. Once viewed as one of India’s brightest limited-overs prospects, Kishan managed scores of just 1 and 14 in his two innings. His inability to provide stability in the middle order added to India’s batting concerns, particularly at crucial stages of the series.

Fast bowler Prince Yadav, who had impressed during the T20I leg against Ireland and England, was unable to replicate that form in the longer format. Handed an opportunity in the deciding ODI at Lord’s, the young pacer returned figures of 1 for 79 from his 10 overs, conceding runs at an economy of 7.90. While one match may not define his career, the performance did little to strengthen his case.

With the selectors expected to chart India’s roadmap for the next ODI cycle, performances on the England tour are unlikely to be forgotten in a hurry. Competition for places is only set to intensify, and unless these players rediscover their form quickly, breaking back into the ODI squad could become an increasingly difficult challenge.
