Mexico defeat Ecuador 2-0, reach Round of 16
Co-hosts Mexico booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 with a commanding 2-0 victory over Ecuador in their Round of 32 encounter on Tuesday (local time), ending a decades-long wait for a knockout-stage win at the tournament.
The victory marked Mexico’s first FIFA World Cup knockout triumph since 1986 and ended an eight-match losing streak in World Cup knockout fixtures, the longest such run in the tournament’s history. The match, which was delayed by an hour due to heavy rain and lightning, saw El Tri extend their unbeaten run while continuing their impressive defensive form.
Mexico made a bright start and took control of the contest before halftime. Julian Quinones opened the scoring after capitalising on a defensive error, before Raul Jimenez doubled the lead later in the first half to hand the hosts a comfortable advantage heading into the interval.

Ecuador enjoyed more possession after the break and pushed to reduce the deficit, but Mexico’s disciplined defence stood firm to preserve yet another clean sheet. Ecuador’s hopes suffered a further setback deep into stoppage time when defender Piero Hincapie was shown a red card.
The win was Mexico’s fourth consecutive victory of the tournament and extended their run without conceding a goal, underlining Javier Aguirre’s side as one of the standout performers of the competition.
Mexico will now face the winners of the England-DR Congo Round of 32 fixture as they seek to continue their impressive World Cup campaign on home soil.
The match also witnessed a historic milestone for teenage midfielder Gilberto Mora. At 17 years and 259 days old, he became the second-youngest player ever to start a FIFA World Cup knockout match, behind only Pele, who achieved the feat at 17 years and 239 days during the 1958 World Cup, according to ESPN FC on X.
Jimenez also entered the record books with his goal. At 35 years and 56 days old, he became the oldest Mexican player to score in a FIFA World Cup knockout match and the first Mexican in his 30s to score during the knockout stages, according to ESPN Insights on X.
