The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to become the largest edition in the tournament’s history, with 48 teams, three host nations and a record 104 matches spread across 16 stadiums over 39 days, according to official figures and tournament data.

To be held across the United States, Canada and Mexico, the expanded edition marks the first time the World Cup will feature 48 teams, up from the traditional 32, following FIFA’s decision to widen global participation. The expansion has also introduced four additional groups in the opening stage and a new round of 32 in the knockout phase.

The United States will host the bulk of the matches with 11 venues, while Mexico and Canada will stage three and two venues respectively. Mexico will host 13 matches, including the opening fixture against South Africa in Mexico City on June 11 and three knockout-stage games.

Canada will also host 13 matches, beginning with its opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12, along with three knockout fixtures. The United States will stage the remaining 78 matches, including all quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The tournament will feature a record 1,248 players drawn from 449 domestic clubs across 71 countries. Of these, 357 players have previous World Cup experience, while 891 will make their debut on football’s biggest stage.

England leads all nations with 200 squad players active in its domestic leagues, followed by Germany (109), France (86), Spain (86), Italy (71) and Saudi Arabia (49). Major League Soccer will also have a significant presence with 44 active players, while 103 participants have some MLS experience.

At club level, Manchester City leads the pack with 19 players representing their nations, followed by Bayern Munich (18), Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal (16 each), and Barcelona (15).

Several individual milestones are also in focus. Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, with 226 international caps, will extend his record as the most-capped men’s footballer and is set to join Lionel Messi as one of the few players to appear in six World Cups. Messi, meanwhile, holds the record for most World Cup appearances with 26 matches.

The tournament also carries goal-scoring milestones, with Germany’s Miroslav Klose’s record of 16 World Cup goals under potential threat from modern stars such as Kylian Mbappé, who already has 12.

Historically, only eight nations have won the World Cup, with Brazil leading on five titles. Four teams—Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan and Uzbekistan—will make their World Cup debuts, taking the total number of participating nations in tournament history to 84.

With expanded teams, new hosts and unprecedented participation, the 2026 edition is poised to redefine the scale of global football’s biggest event.
