Indian opener Rohit Sharma has surged to the second spot in the ICC ODI batting rankings, displacing Pakistanโ€™s Babar Azam, even as speculation continues over his future in international cricket.

ย

The 38-year-old, absent from competitive action since the 2025 IPL season, now has 756 rating points, trailing only compatriot and Test captain Shubman Gill, who remains No. 1 with 784 points.

ย

Babar slipped to third after a series of low scores in Pakistanโ€™s recently concluded ODI series against the West Indies in the Caribbean. Former India captain Virat Kohli retained fourth place with 736 points.

Both Rohit and Kohli had stepped away from the Test format before Indiaโ€™s tour of England but have made clear their intention to continue in ODIs. The two could feature in the home three-match series against Australia in October, with training already underway.

Rohit, regarded among the all-time greats of the one-day game alongside Kohli, enjoyed his career-best ranking during the 2019 World Cup, amassing 882 points after a record-breaking fifth century in the tournament. The pair last appeared in an ODI during Indiaโ€™s Champions Trophy triumph in the UAE earlier this year.

India currently boast five players in the top 15 of the men’s ODI batting rankings, with Shreyas Iyer in eighth place and KL Rahul in 15th position.
