RCB and Virat Kohli’s 18-year wait faces PBKS’s grit in IPL final
Virat Kohli’s nearly two-decade-long quest to claim an IPL trophy with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) meets the determined Punjab Kings under Shreyas Iyer, as the 18th season finale of the world’s biggest T20 league unfolds at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Tuesday.
The summit clash may see thousands of fans sporting jersey No.18, rallying behind Kohli, who is appearing in his fourth IPL final overall. The occasion carries added poignancy as it marks Kohli’s last outing on the cricket field for some time, following his recent retirement from Test cricket and with India’s next One-Day International series still months away.
Shedding the struggles that hampered previous campaigns, RCB have been clinical throughout the tournament, entering the final after an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Punjab in Qualifier 1. Kohli, who has amassed 614 runs this season, has led from the front, anchoring the innings and laying solid platforms.
However, this season’s success for RCB has been bolstered by contributions beyond their superstar. Phil Salt has proved an ideal partner to Kohli’s aggressive style, while Mayank Agarwal, captain Rajat Patidar and Jitesh Sharma have provided crucial support.
The fitness of Tim David, sidelined for RCB’s last two matches, remains uncertain. David forms a vital death-overs pairing with the powerful Romario Shepherd. On the bowling front, Josh Hazlewood, the fourth highest wicket-taker with 21 scalps, has steered RCB’s rise and will be keen to add more in his final match.

Punjab Kings, undeterred by their heavy defeat at home to RCB in Qualifier 1, bounced back impressively to eliminate five-time champions Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2, reaching their first final in 11 years.
Both sides, finishing first and second respectively after the gruelling 70-match league stage, now vie for a trophy that has eluded them since the IPL’s inception.
Punjab’s transformation under the leadership of captain Shreyas Iyer and coach Ricky Ponting has been remarkable. Iyer, with 603 runs this season, arrives at his second consecutive IPL final — having won last year’s title with Kolkata Knight Riders. His leadership credentials are unmatched, being the only player in IPL history to captain three different teams in finals, including Delhi Capitals.
Iyer’s relentless hunger for success shines through, as does the support from teammates Prabhsimran Singh, Josh Inglis, Priyansh Arya and Shashank Singh.
Punjab’s bowling, despite missing Marcus Jansen, impressed in restricting Mumbai Indians on a batting-friendly wicket, indicating depth beyond perceptions. Yuzvendra Chahal, nursing a hand injury and not at his peak in Qualifier 2, will be crucial against his former team.
While rain is not expected to disrupt play, organisers have extended the playing time by an hour, with a reserve day scheduled to ensure the contest concludes.
