Pietersen says RCB decision to oust Chahal worst in IPL history

Never one to shy away from strong opinions, Kevin Pietersen has once again stirred debate ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026, taking a bold and uncompromising stance on some of the league’s biggest decisions and player selections.

Having featured in 36 IPL matches between 2009 and 2016, scoring 1,001 runs with a century and four fifties for franchises like Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Delhi Daredevils and Rising Pune Supergiants, Pietersen’s voice still carries weight. And this time, he hasn’t held back.

His most explosive remark came while discussing Yuzvendra Chahal. Pietersen labelled Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s decision to release the leg-spinner as “the worst in IPL history”, a statement that has sent ripples across the cricketing world. Chahal, one of the most successful bowlers in IPL history, was picked up by Punjab Kings for ₹18 crore after RCB failed to bring him back in the 2025 auction—an outcome Pietersen believes reflects a massive strategic blunder.

But Pietersen didn’t stop there. In a move that underlined his fearless, no-rules approach, he picked an all-time IPL XI that openly defied tournament regulations. Ignoring the four-overseas-player limit, he packed his side with five global superstars—Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine and Lasith Malinga—prioritising impact over legality. It was a selection that spoke volumes about his philosophy: pick match-winners, worry about the rules later.

In the batting unit, AB de Villiers was an automatic choice, slotting into the middle order alongside the ever-reliable Suresh Raina. However, Pietersen raised eyebrows by leaving out modern mainstays like KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Glenn Maxwell and even Kieron Pollard—decisions that only added to the intrigue.

At the top of his leadership hierarchy stood one man—MS Dhoni. “There’s only one non-negotiable,” Pietersen declared, making it clear that Dhoni’s place in the XI was beyond debate. When it came to all-rounders, Pietersen once again went against the grain. He overlooked Hardik Pandya in favour of the explosive Caribbean duo of Andre Russell and Sunil Narine, even claiming that Narine would walk into any IPL side. Ravindra Jadeja completed his all-round options, offering balance between bat and ball.

In the bowling department, Pietersen was emphatic. He chose Yuzvendra Chahal over Rashid Khan, doubling down on his criticism of RCB’s decision. Meanwhile, his pace attack needed no deliberation as he went straight for two legends of the format, Jasprit Bumrah and Lasith Malinga, calling them arguably the finest fast bowlers in IPL history.

Off the field, Pietersen has also made headlines by stepping away from his role with Delhi Capitals. After serving as mentor in IPL 2025, he opted out of the 2026 season, citing time constraints. However, his presence will still be felt, as he returns to the league in a commentary role—ensuring his voice, as always, remains at the centre of IPL conversations.

Bold, unapologetic and fiercely opinionated, Pietersen has once again proven that even off the field, he remains one of the IPL’s most compelling figures.
