Lakshya Sen’s India Open campaign ended in heartbreak on Friday as the 24-year-old went down 21-17, 13-21, 18-21 to world No. 12 Lin Chun-Yi of Chinese Taipei in a gripping men’s singles quarterfinal.

The Almora shuttler produced a high-intensity display, marked by long rallies, sharp net play, and tense exchanges over three exhausting games, but could not capitalise on crucial moments in the decider.

Lakshya surged to a strong start, breaking away at the first interval and eventually sealing the opening game with a third game point, benefiting from Lin’s errors and crisp forecourt shots.

In the second game, conditions challenged Lakshya’s length and control. Despite closing a deficit through clever backhand placements and deceptive serves, he fell 13-21 as Lin regained momentum.

The decider saw Lakshya race to a 4-0 lead, with both players exchanging spectacular smashes and deceptive returns. The match remained neck-and-neck, with the score locked at several points, including 15-15 and 18-16. Lakshya executed a stunning behind-the-back shot and body smash to stay in contention, but Lin eventually converted his match point after Lakshya slipped during a crucial rally.

“The contest was intense, and Lakshya showed tremendous grit. He gave the home fans plenty of moments to cheer,” said a tournament official.

Despite the loss, Lakshya’s performance underscored his growing stature on the international stage, highlighting his tactical awareness, speed, and shot-making ability.

The India Open Super 750 continues with remaining men’s and women’s singles and doubles fixtures, as well as semifinals and finals scheduled over the weekend.
