World No. 1 Jannik Sinner reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals even after injuring his right elbow in a fall in the first game and dropping the first two sets when his opponent, Grigor Dimitrov, withdrew in the third set because of an injured pectoral muscle.

ย

Sinner said he will go for an MRI examination on Tuesday on his elbow โ€œto see if thereโ€™s something seriousโ€. โ€œThere is some concern,โ€ he said. Sinner had not dropped a set till he trailed No. 19 Dimitrov 6-3, 7-5. But at 2-all in the third set, Dimitrov quit.

ย

This is the fifth consecutive Grand Slam tournament where 34-year-old Dimitrov failed to complete a match. This had also happened with him at the Australian Open in January and the French Open in May as well as last yearโ€™s Wimbledon and US Open.

ย

โ€œHeโ€™s been so unlucky in the past couple of years. An incredible player. A good friend of mine, also. We understand each other very well, off the court, too, I hope he has a speedy recovery,โ€ said Sinner. After the last point against Sinner, Dimitrov served and immediately clutched his chest with his left hand. He took a few steps and crouched, before sitting on the grass. Sinner even walked over to check on him. โ€œI don’t take this as a win, at all,โ€ Sinner said. โ€œThis is just a very unfortunate moment to witness for all of us.โ€

ย

Sinner is a three-time Grand Slam champion who will play No. 10 Ben Shelton of the United States for a spot in the semifinals. Sinner leads the head-to-head record against Shelton 5-1. He has won the last five matches against Shelton in straight sets, including at Wimbledon last year and the Australian Open this year.

ย

Right after Sinner fell behind by two sets against Dimitrov, the match was stopped so that the stadiumโ€™s retractable roof could be closed because of fading sunlight. Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray was not happy with the decision. โ€œSo ridiculous to close the roof at this stage of the match. At least an hour of light left…well over a set of tennis can still be played. Itโ€™s an outdoor tournament!โ€ Murray wrote on social media.

Andreeva youngest in 18 years to reach Wimbledon quarterfinals

Mirra Andreeva was the last person on the Centre Court to realise that she had defeated Emma Navarro, a result that made her the youngest woman in 18 years to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals. Andreeva was so focused that she did not think about the score and did not realise that the fourth-round match was over when Navarro netted a forehand. So, rather than celebrating her 6-2, 6-3 win, Andreeva calmly turned back and started getting ready for the next point. It was after seeing the reaction of the crowd and her coach Conchita Martinez that she realised she had won.
