Hongkongers living in mainland China have been urged to vote in the coming Legislative Council election, with authorities planning to set up a special polling station at the airport’s newly reopened Terminal 2.

The Hong Kong government’s Beijing office on Saturday held a briefing on election arrangements and the role of the legislature, encouraging voters on the mainland to return to the city to cast their votes.

Acting office director Amy Yuen Wai-yin said the polling station at Hong Kong International Airport would offer more convenience to electors living across the border.

“In the previous district council election, the near-boundary polling stations were located in Sheung Shui, but some friends told me they were not travelling back through land border crossings,” she said.

“But this time, there will also be an extra polling station at the airport, which makes it more convenient for everyone.

“The polling time has also been extended and will run from 7.30am to 11.30pm. I hope that such arrangements will allow everyone who wants to vote to cast their ballots.”
