Gunman who entered southern Thailand school detained, hostages freed, police official says

A โ€‹gunman who fired โ shots at a school in Hat Yai district in southern โ€ŒThailand on Wednesday (February 11, 2026) has been detained and โ€Œall the people โ€Œwho โ were held hostage โ have been freed, a police official told Reuters.

An 18-year-old man โ€‹entered the โ€ŒPatongprathankiriwat School in Songkhla Provinceโ€™s Hat Yai earlier on Wednesday (February 11, 2026) with a gun, the โ€Œprovincial administration said โ€‹on social media.

โ€œThe perpetrator has been โ captured,โ€ Deputy Superintendent Wichian Soboon told Reuters.

At least three โ€Œpeople were injured in the incident, a second police official said.

Gun violence and ownership are not uncommon in โ€ŒThailand, where a former police officer killed โ€‹36 people, including 22 children, in a โ gun-and-knife attack at a nursery โ in the countryโ€™s east in 2022.
