Fed policy tensions: Donald Trump says heโ€™s 'not talking about' firing Jerome Powell but calls him โ€˜lousyโ€™; hints at change in 2026

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he is not currently planning to remove Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, though he sharply criticised the central bank chiefโ€™s performance.“He’s doing a lousy job but no, I’m not talking about that,” Trump told reporters when asked if he was considering Powellโ€™s dismissal, AFP reported. However, he added that while such a move was “highly unlikely,” he wouldnโ€™t rule it out.Trump also hinted at upcoming changes, noting that Powell’s term ends next year. โ€œIโ€™ll get to make a change in the coming months,โ€ he said, suggesting that a replacement could be on the cards in 2026.The comments come amid heightened friction between the White House and the Fed, as Trump continues to pressure the central bank for aggressive interest rate cuts to support the economy.
