Beijing has named a senior editor of the English-language China Daily newspaper as a deputy director of the central governmentโ€™s liaison office in Hong Kong, confirming an earlier Post report.

The State Council announced Sun Shangwuโ€™s new role on Saturday. A source earlier said that the new deputy director would be taking charge of publicity work.

The Post had reported that Sun, 56, who had been a deputy editor-in-chief of China Daily, had been chosen to improve the central governmentโ€™s narratives for international audiences.

Sources had previously said Sun would help the liaison office engage better with the English-speaking world and enhance its footing in the English-language media landscape, โ€œas Beijing seeks to improve Chinaโ€™s narrative in Hong Kong and the worldโ€.

An insider had said Sun was expected to work with all news platforms to โ€œtell the Hong Kong story wellโ€.

Sun is filling a position left vacant after his predecessor, Lu Xinning, was transferred back to mainland China to serve as a member of the Communist Partyโ€™s Standing Committee of Guangxi in August last year.
