OpenAI has asked a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit from Elon Musk’s AI startup xAI, which claims that the company lured away its employees to steal trade secrets. OpenAI called the case part of Musk’s “ongoing harassment” and denied all allegations as “false and unsubstantiated.”In its court filing, OpenAI said, “Under Musk’s leadership, talented xAI employees are leaving in droves, and some are coming to OpenAI to help advance OpenAI’s mission,” Reuters reported citing the filing.“Those employees have every right to go where they choose, and OpenAI has the right to hire them.”The lawsuit, filed last week in San Francisco federal court, accuses OpenAI of targeting former xAI staff to gain access to trade secrets tied to xAI’s AI chatbot Grok, which the company claims is more advanced than OpenAI’s ChatGPT.This legal battle is just one part of a broader clash between Musk and OpenAI, which he co-founded with CEO Sam Altman. The fight comes amid a fierce race in Silicon Valley to recruit top AI talent and capture market share in the growing AI sector.xAI has also filed a separate lawsuit against Apple, accusing the company of collaborating with OpenAI to suppress rival AI platforms. Both Apple and OpenAI have denied the claims and asked the court to dismiss the case, Reuters reported.Musk has additionally sued OpenAI over its transition to a for-profit structure, while OpenAI has countersued him for harassment.On Thursday, OpenAI said xAI’s trade-secret allegations were meant to pressure the company and divert attention from the shortcomings of [Musk’s] own AI projects.The AI giant further added, “The truth is that xAI is hemorrhaging talent to other competitors, including OpenAI.”
