Against Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals seek top-order stability
The spotlight will be firmly on the top order of Delhi Capitals when they face a confident Mumbai Indians in their first home fixture of the IPL 2026 season here on Saturday. Delhi, who experimented with as many as seven opening combinations last season, had hoped for greater stability this year. However, early signs suggest the problem persists.
While chasing a modest 142 against the Lucknow Super Giants in their opener, the Capitals’ top order faltered badly. KL Rahul fell for a first-ball duck, while Nitish Rana and Pathum Nissanka departed in quick succession, leaving the side reeling at 26 for four.
What followed, though, was a display of composure from 22-year-old impact substitute Sameer Rizvi, who struck an unbeaten half-century. Alongside the experienced Tristan Stubbs, he stitched an unbroken stand to guide DC to a six-wicket win.
While Rizvi’s fearless stroke play stood out, concerns over the fragile top order remain—especially against a Mumbai attack led by the formidable Jasprit Bumrah.
Still chasing their maiden IPL title, Delhi will hope for more solidity at the top. They could turn to Abishek Porel, who showed promise last season, or the mercurial Prithvi Shaw, who continues to battle inconsistency.
In contrast, DC’s bowling unit appeared more settled despite the absence of Australian quick Mitchell Starc, who remains unavailable. South African pacer Lungi Ngidi impressed with his variations, while T Natarajan, returning from injury setbacks, claimed three wickets against LSG. Mukesh Kumar also kept things tight with an economical spell.
The spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and skipper Axar Patel controlled the middle overs effectively, preventing the opposition from building momentum.
This mix of pace variations and spin control will be crucial against Mumbai’s formidable batting line-up, featuring Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma.

Mumbai head into the contest brimming with confidence after ending a 14-year opening-match jinx with a record chase against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Rohit rolled back the years with a blistering 78, marking a strong return to T20 form. His opening partner Ryan Rickelton, preferred over the experienced Quinton de Kock, provided excellent support with an aggressive 81 and is likely to retain his spot.
Mumbai’s bowling, though slightly expensive, delivered at key moments. Shardul Thakur picked up three crucial wickets, while Bumrah and Trent Boult maintained control.
Mumbai also deployed Suryakumar as an impact player due to a minor groin issue, and it remains to be seen whether the Indian T20I skipper will be fit to play a full role at the Feroz Shah Kotla on Saturday.
