Abhishek Sharma loses 25 pc match fee for on-field dissent

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s vice-captain, Abhishek Sharma, has been slapped with a fine of 25 per cent of his match fee following a run-in with the officials during his side’s recent clash against Kolkata Knight Riders. In addition to the financial penalty, the opening batsman has had one demerit point added to his disciplinary record for a breach of the IPL Code of Conduct.

ย

The sanction stems from a Level 1 offence under Article 2.3, which covers the show of dissent at an umpireโ€™s decision. Sharma admitted to the charge and accepted the match referee’s ruling, which, under the tournament’s regulations for such minor infractions, is considered final and binding.

ย

The flashpoint occurred in the ninth over after Sharma had already put KKR to the sword, scoring 48 runs off just 21 deliveries. His innings, which included four boundaries and four sixes, had given SRH a platform to win their first game of the 2026 season in a dominant 65-run win. However, his dismissal was surrounded by controversy after Blessing Muzarabani got an edge which was caught by a diving Varun Chakaravarthy.

ย

Despite television replays appearing to offer no conclusive proof that the ball had been held cleanly off the turf, TV umpire Nitin Menon ruled the catch legal. Clearly incensed by the decision, Sharma made his feelings known as he trudged back to the pavilion, a display of disappointment that the match officials felt crossed the line into a breach of conduct. While the victory gets Hyderabadโ€™s campaign off the mark, the disciplinary black mark serves as a sour note on an otherwise stellar individual performance from the vice-captain.
