Francis Ford Coppola received the prestigious AFI Life Achievement Award on Saturday night at the Dolby Theatre, celebrated by an all-star gathering that felt like a tribute to an era of filmmaking few can match.

Steven Spielberg called The Godfather โ€œthe greatest American film ever made,โ€ while Robert De Niro joked about landing a role only in the sequel and Harrison Ford fought back tears recalling his work in The Conversation.

Coppola, 86, reflected on the honour ahead of the ceremony. โ€œThis is a personal recognition from the people youโ€™ve known all your life… itโ€™s like a homecoming,โ€ he said on the red carpet. A founding trustee of AFI, Coppolaโ€™s journey came full circle with this award, which was first given to John Ford in 1973.

During the event, Coppola sat between longtime friends Steven Spielberg and George Lucas as a parade of Hollywood heavyweights โ€” including Spike Lee, Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino, and Morgan Freeman โ€” paid tribute.

โ€œYou, sir, are peerless. You redefined the canon of American film,โ€ Spielberg said. Lucas, who co-founded American Zoetrope with Coppola in 1969, presented the award. โ€œWe had no rules. We wrote them, and you were holding the pen,โ€ Lucas told the crowd.

Morgan Freeman summed up the night with a laugh, saying, โ€œDreamer of dreams on a dime, teller of tales that cost and lost millions. But tonight, (expletive) the bankers and the bank.โ€

Coppola, largely stoic throughout the night, broke into a wide smile as he finally took the stage. โ€œMy home isnโ€™t really a place at all, but you โ€” friends, colleagues, teachers, family,โ€ he said. โ€œI am and will always be nothing more than one of you.โ€

The evening included wine from the Francis Ford Coppola Winery and cannoli for dessert.

Actors reflected on Coppolaโ€™s deep love for storytelling and film education. Andy Garcia, who starred in The Godfather Part III, said, โ€œYou go in seeking an associateโ€™s degree and walk out with a masterโ€™s.

Despite Megalopolis โ€” Coppolaโ€™s latest film โ€” struggling at the box office, admiration for his artistic conviction remains strong. Adam Driver, star of Megalopolis, praised Coppola for holding onto his vision in a time when commercial success often overshadows artistic integrity.
