England beat India by 27 runs in a high-scoring match at Lord’s on Sunday to register their first bilateral ODI series win against the world number one side after eight years.

For the hosts, left-handed opening batsman Ben Duckett scored 141 off 135 balls to set a massive 387-run target for the strong Indian batting line-up.

It was the highest individual innings in an ODI at Lord’s, beating the legendary Viv Richards’ 138 not out in the 1979 World Cup final.

When asked about the milestone, the English batter replied, “That’s pretty cool to me. Very precious. But all that I’m really bothered about today is that we’ve beaten the best side in the world.”

“We’ve probably had a fair few critics over the last 12 to 18 months, and a lot of that has been rightly so at times, but now we can build on this.

We’ve shown what we’re capable of; we are just trying to be as consistent with it as possible moving forward,” he added.

Chasing the target, India started strongly with opener Shubman Gill scoring 77 runs, while Rohit Sharma, who looked out of sorts in the previous two games, scored a brilliant 138 off 110 deliveries, laying a solid foundation for the chase.   However, the rest of the batting line-up faltered in the end.

For England, Sam Curran was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4-75, as the Indian batsmen after Gill, Sharma and Kohli succumbed under pressure. India had also lost the preceding five-match T20I series 4-0.
