Assam’s Ankita Konwar has become the first woman from Northeast India and the first Assamese woman to complete the iconic English Channel Relay Swim, adding another landmark achievement to her growing list of endurance feats.

Konwar completed the crossing as part of a six-member international relay team that swam from Dover in England to the French coast in 13 hours and five minutes. Battling icy waters, strong currents, relentless tides and unpredictable weather, the team earned official recognition from the English Channel Swimming Association (ECSA) for completing one of the world’s toughest open-water challenges.

The achievement marks another milestone for the endurance athlete, whose sporting journey began unusually late. Unlike most elite swimmers, Konwar learnt to swim as an adult before dedicating herself to endurance sports through years of disciplined training.

Since then, she has completed an IRONMAN 70.3, finished the prestigious T100 Triathlon and participated in endurance events across the world. Raised in Assam, Konwar has often credited her upbringing in the Northeast for instilling the resilience and perseverance that have shaped her sporting career.

Beyond competition, Konwar has emerged as one of India’s leading advocates of fitness and endurance. Alongside endurance athlete Milind Soman, she has taken part in long-distance runs, mountain races, Independence Day endurance challenges and nationwide fitness campaigns aimed at encouraging healthier lifestyles.

Her achievements have also inspired many women and young athletes, particularly in the Northeast, by challenging stereotypes surrounding age, gender and athletic ability.

Reflecting on the feat after completing the Channel crossing, Konwar described it as “far more than a swim”.

“The English Channel is far more than a swim—it is a journey of resilience, teamwork and trusting yourself when nature tests every ounce of your spirit. Every wave reminds you that giving up could be an option, but moving forward is a choice,” she said.

Calling it an honour to represent India while carrying the pride of Assam and the Northeast, Konwar said she hoped her journey would encourage others to believe in themselves.

“If someone like me, who learnt swimming only a few years ago, can achieve this, I hope it encourages others to believe in themselves and take that very first step,” she added.
