Tennis player Nagal wins ATP Challenger Intaro Open title

Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal ended a lengthy wait for silverware by capturing the ATP Challenger Intaro Open title in Targu Mures, Romania, defeating French qualifier Felix Balshaw 6-3, 7-5 in the final on Saturday. The victory marks Nagal’s first ATP Challenger crown in more than two years and provides a significant boost to his efforts to climb back up the world rankings.

ย

The 28-year-old produced a composed and disciplined performance on the clay courts, controlling the opening set with aggressive baseline play and strong serving before overcoming a spirited fightback from Balshaw in the second set to seal the championship in straight sets.

The title ends Nagal’s drought at the Challenger level since his triumph at the Heilbronn Challenger in Germany in June 2024.

ย

It also represents the seventh ATP Challenger singles title of his career and further reinforces his reputation as one of India’s strongest clay-court players, with five of his seven Challenger titles coming on the surface.

ย

Apart from the trophy, Nagal earned 75 ATP ranking points, a reward expected to lift him to around world No. 219 when the latest ATP rankings are released. The victory also earned the Indian player prize money of Euro 15,510.

ย

Nagal looked in control from the start of the final, dictating rallies with his heavy groundstrokes and forcing errors from his French opponent. After taking the opening set 6-3, the Indian faced a much tougher challenge in the second as Balshaw raised his level and stayed within touching distance throughout the set.

ย

Despite the pressure, Nagal remained composed in the crucial moments, holding serve confidently and capitalising on his opportunities late in the set to complete a straight-sets victory and secure the championship.

ย

The triumph comes at a crucial stage of Nagal’s season. After breaking into the world’s top 100 previously, the Indian has been working to rebuild his ranking following a difficult spell marked by inconsistent results and early exits from tournaments.

ย

Before arriving in Romania, Nagal had competed in 13 ATP Challenger events this season but had struggled to build momentum. In most tournaments, his campaign ended before the later rounds, with a quarterfinal appearance at the Challenger event in Chisinau, Moldova, standing as his best performance prior to this week’s breakthrough.

ย

His impressive run at the Intaro Open signals a welcome return to form and could provide the confidence needed for a strong second half of the season. The additional ranking points will improve his chances of qualifying directly for higher-level Challenger events and the qualifying draws of ATP Tour tournaments and Grand Slams.

ย

Known for his resilience and fighting spirit, Nagal has established himself as one of India’s leading singles players over the past few years, producing several memorable performances on the international circuit. His latest Challenger title not only ends a frustrating wait for another trophy but also serves as an important milestone in his bid to climb back among the world’s top-ranked players.

ย

With renewed confidence, valuable ranking points and another Challenger title to his name, Nagal will now look to build on this momentum as he targets a sustained rise up the ATP rankings in the coming months.
