Gill at number 2 spot

India captain Shubman Gill climbed three places to reach No. 2 in the latest ICC ODI batting rankings released on Wednesday, while New Zealand fast bowleIndia captain Shubman Gill rose to share the top spot in the ICC Test bowling rankings alongside India’s Jasprit Bumrah.

Gill’s rise comes after an impressive performance in the recently concluded three-match ODI series against Afghanistan. The Indian skipper scored 84 and 154 in the opening two matches before being rested for the final ODI, which India won comfortably by nine wickets. He now trails New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell, the current No. 1-ranked ODI batter, by just 24 rating points.

Among other Indian batters, Ishan Kishan made a significant jump of 21 places to reach 43rd position. Virat Kohli, who missed the Afghanistan series due to a hamstring injury, slipped one place to No. 3, while Rohit Sharma retained his fourth spot. Shreyas Iyer gained one position to move up to 14th, whereas KL Rahul dropped two places and is now ranked 11th.

India’s bowlers also enjoyed notable gains in the updated ODI rankings. Arshdeep Singh advanced 16 places to reach 22nd, Prasidh Krishna surged 34 spots to 58th, and all-rounder Washington Sundar climbed 17 places to occupy joint 71st position.

In Test cricket, Matt Henry’s outstanding performance against England helped him become the joint No. 1-ranked Test bowler alongside Bumrah. The New Zealand pacer claimed five wickets in each innings of the second Test, finishing with an 11-wicket match haul that played a pivotal role in New Zealand’s emphatic 253-run victory and helped level the three-match World Test Championship series at 1-1.

“Pacer Matt Henry becomes just the third New Zealander to become the top-ranked Test bowler as the 34-year-old joins India seamer Jasprit Bumrah at the summit of the bowling rankings following his 11-wicket haul during the second Test against England,” the ICC said in a statement.

Bumrah had held the No. 1 position outright since surpassing South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada in November 2024. However, Henry’s match-winning display earned him enough rating points to draw level with the Indian star at the top.

The achievement is particularly significant for New Zealand cricket, as Henry becomes the first Kiwi fast bowler in 36 years to attain the No. 1 Test bowling ranking. He joins the elite company of Jack Cowie, who reached the top in 1947, and the legendary Richard Hadlee, who dominated the rankings between 1984 and 1990.

“Henry joins Jack Cowie (1947) and Richard Hadlee (1984-1990) as New Zealanders to hold the premier ranking for bowlers in Test cricket, with the right-armer ending a 36-year wait for the Kiwis in the category,” the ICC added.

Meanwhile, England’s stand-in captain Joe Root moved up two places to reclaim the No. 1 position in the ICC Test batting rankings, further underlining his remarkable consistency in the longest format of the game.
