Kohli in India ODI squad for England tour

Star batter Virat Kohli has been included in India’s squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against England next month, subject to fitness clearance, as the BCCI announced a 15-member squad for the white-ball assignment on Sunday.

ย

Kohli, currently in Delhi for a promotional engagement, is scheduled to report to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru on Monday, where he will undergo a fitness assessment before receiving final clearance for selection.

ย

The former India captain had been sidelined with a hamstring injury sustained during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s title defence campaign in the Indian Premier League. The setback forced him to miss India’s recent three-match ODI series against Afghanistan. As part of his rehabilitation process, members of the CoE sports science team had earlier travelled to England to monitor his recovery and progress.

ย

The ODI squad, to be led by Shubman Gill, features few surprises. One notable omission is young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was part of the squad for the Afghanistan series and scored a century in the third ODI. However, Jaiswal had been drafted in as Kohli’s replacement, and with the senior batter returning, he has made way in accordance with the selection committee’s usual policy of restoring first-choice players after injury layoffs.

ย

According to a BCCI source familiar with the selection process, the team management is expected to stick with an established top order against England. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill are likely to continue as opening partners, with Kohli slotting back into the crucial No. 3 position.

ย

“There won’t be much experimentation in the batting order against England. Virat returns to his usual position, while Ishan Kishan remains an option as a reserve opener and flexible batting choice,” the source said.

ย

India have also welcomed back premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested recently as part of workload management plans. Experienced all-rounder Axar Patel has also returned to the ODI squad, replacing left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey.

ย

Dubey, meanwhile, will join the India A squad for the upcoming multi-day series against Sri Lanka A as selectors continue to monitor his development in longer formats.

ย

The source added that both Axar and Dubey remain in contention for future white-ball assignments, with the team management keen to assess their suitability ahead of major ICC events. At present, Ravindra Jadeja is primarily being considered for Test cricket responsibilities.

India’s ODI series against England will be played at Edgbaston on July 14, Sophia Gardens on July 16, and Lord’s on July 19.

ย

In a separate development, spinner Varun Chakravarthy has been ruled out of India’s T20I series against Ireland as he continues to recover from a foot injury. The BCCI confirmed that the mystery spinner is in the final stages of rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence after suffering a left foot injury during IPL 2026.ย  Shreyas Iyer will captain the Indian T20I side in Ireland, with Tilak Varma named vice-captain for the series.

ย

India’s ODI squad for England comprises Shubman Gill (captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (vice-captain), KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh and Gurnoor Brar.

ย

The updated T20I squad for the Ireland series includes Shreyas Iyer (captain), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Tilak Varma (vice-captain), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Prasidh Krishna.
