India women beat Japan 2-1
The Indian women’s hockey team secured a place in the semifinals of the FIH Nations Cup after registering a hard-fought 2-1 win over Japan on Tuesday. Captain Salima Tete and Lalremsiami found the back of the net for India in a closely contested Pool A encounter.
The victory marked India’s second successive win in the tournament, taking their tally to six points from two matches and guaranteeing a berth in the last four of the competition, which serves as a qualifying event for next year’s FIH Pro League.
India finally broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute when skipper Salima Tete capitalised on sustained attacking pressure to put her side ahead. Japan, however, responded swiftly, drawing level just two minutes later through Ai Hiramitsu.

With the contest finely balanced heading into the final quarter, Lalremsiami delivered the decisive blow in the 49th minute. Her goal ensured India emerged victorious despite a spirited late fightback from the Japanese side.
The match was also a landmark occasion for midfielder Jyoti, who celebrated her 100th appearance for the senior national team.ย The opening two quarters saw both teams create chances but neither could convert, resulting in a goalless first half. India eventually made the breakthrough through a well-executed penalty-corner variation. Nikki Pradhan’s clever touch redirected Navneet Kaur’s strike into the path of Salima, who calmly slotted the ball into the net.
Japan quickly restored parity when Hiramitsu successfully converted a penalty corner in the 35th minute.
As the match entered its decisive phase, India regained the lead through Lalremsiami. Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam produced a precise pass from the edge of the circle into a dangerous area, and Lalremsiami expertly deflected the ball past the goalkeeper.
