Pandya, Yadav in focus as MI take on LSG in IPL
Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav will be under the spotlight when the Mumbai Indians face Lucknow Super Giants in an IPL clash, with both teams already struggling and playoff hopes virtually out of reach.
Five-time champions Mumbai Indians have endured a disappointing season, winning just two of their nine matches and languishing near the bottom of the points table. Much of their inconsistency has been linked to the underwhelming performances of key players like Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav, especially in the absence of Rohit Sharma, who is still working his way back after a hamstring injury earlier in the tournament.
Pandya, who has scored 146 runs and taken four wickets so far, has had a tough time both as a player and as captain. His tactical decisions have often come under scrutiny, and his individual contributions with bat and ball have not matched expectations. While the entire squad has struggled collectively, Pandyaโs inability to deliver consistently has further compounded Mumbaiโs problems, particularly given his crucial role in a weakened lower order.

Suryakumar Yadav, with 186 runs this season, has also failed to make a significant impact. Although he has managed to get starts, he has been unable to convert them into substantial innings, often falling while attempting his trademark aggressive strokes. His struggles against pace bowling have been especially noticeable, with his average against fast bowlers dropping to just above 10 in this phase. Despite beginning 2026 with a string of strong performances after a quiet 2025, the Indian T20I captain has once again hit a rough patch.
Mumbai Indians are not alone in their struggles, as Lucknow Super Giants have faced a similarly disappointing campaign. Led by Rishabh Pant, LSG have lost five matches in a row and currently sit at the bottom of the standings. Their season began on a shaky note before a brief recovery with two consecutive wins, but their progress stalled due to repeated batting failures.
Even strong bowling performances have not been enough to compensate for their batting woes. In their previous outing, Mohsin Khan delivered a standout performance with figures of 5 for 23 โ the best in the tournament so far โ but LSG still faltered, making a questionable decision to send an out-of-form Nicholas Pooran into the Super Over.
Pant, too, finds himself under pressure, with his form in white-ball cricket being closely examined. The wicketkeeper-batter now faces the challenge of rallying his side as Lucknow heads into a demanding stretch of three matches in seven days.
With both teams struggling for consistency and pride at stake, the contest offers an opportunity for key players to regain form even if a playoff berth remains highly unlikely. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm IST.
