Shetty settles for silver as Shi Yu Qi wins Asia title

Indiaโ€™s Ayush Shetty ended his impressive run at the Badminton Asia Championships 2026 with a silver medal after losing to Chinaโ€™s Shi Yu Qi in the menโ€™s singles final on Sunday.

Up against the top seed and reigning world champion, Shetty found it difficult to match Shiโ€™s speed, control, and precision. The Chinese star delivered a dominant performance, winning 21-8, 21-10 to secure his maiden Asia Championships title.

The final turned out to be a largely one-sided contest, with Shi asserting control right from the start. His ability to dictate rallies and force errors kept the Indian shuttler under constant pressure, leaving Shetty with limited opportunities to gain momentum or challenge the flow of the match.

Despite the loss, the tournament marks a significant breakthrough in Shettyโ€™s career. The young Indian reached the final after a series of strong performances, highlighting his rapid rise and growing confidence on the international stage.

One of the standout moments of his campaign came in the semi-finals, where he defeated world No. 1 Kunlavut Vitidsarn in a thrilling encounter. After dropping the first game, Shetty showed remarkable composure and determination to stage a comeback, winning 10-21, 21-19, 21-17 in a hard-fought match.

That victory not only propelled him into the final, but also underlined his potential as a serious contender in menโ€™s singles badminton.
However, in the championship clash, Shiโ€™s experience and tactical sharpness proved decisive. Maintaining relentless pressure throughout, the Chinese player capitalised on shorter rallies and kept unforced errors to a minimum, wrapping up the match efficiently in straight games.

For Shi Yu Qi, the triumph adds another major title to his resume and further cements his status among the elite players in world badminton. His commanding display in the final highlighted the experience gap between the two competitors.

For Shetty, though, the silver medal is a noteworthy achievement and a promising indicator of future success. His attacking style, consistency, and ability to handle high-pressure situations have earned widespread appreciation, with his run in Ningbo seen as a defining moment in his career.

Although he missed out on the title, Shettyโ€™s overall performance in the tournament has firmly established him as one of Indiaโ€™s most exciting emerging talents, offering strong hope for the future of Indian badminton.
