Popularly known as the โBhishma Pitamahโ of the Punjab Congress, Lal Singh breathed his last at a private hospital in Mohali after being rushed there from his residence in Chandigarh following breathing difficulties.
A political career spanning nearly five decades, Lal Singh was among the most influential leaders in the state, playing a key role in governance during critical phases. He rose to prominence in the 1990s as a senior minister in the Cabinet of then Chief Minister Beant Singh.
He later served as finance minister under the Congress government led by Amarinder Singh between 2002 and 2007.
A six-term MLA, Lal Singh was first elected in 1977 from Dakala, a constituency he represented five times, before winning from Sanour in 2012. He also served as president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC).
He is survived by his son, former Samana MLA Kaka Rajinder Singh, and daughter Rupinder Kaur. His last rites will be held in Patiala on Sunday.
