Nepalโ€™s former Prime Minister, K.P. โ€‹Sharma Oli, was taken โ€Œinto custody on Saturday โ€‹(March 28, 2026) as police investigate whether โ he was negligent in failing to prevent dozens of โ€Œdeaths during Gen Z protests last September.

This โ€Œweek, a Nepali โ€Œpanel โ which investigated violence โ during the anti-corruption protests recommended that Mr. Oli, 74, be prosecuted for โ€‹failing to โ€Œprevent the crackdown on the protests.

A total of 76 people were โ€Œkilled in two days โ€‹of unrest, which led to Mr. Oli resigning.

โ€œThey โ took him from his residence this morning,โ€ Min โ€ŒBahadur Shahi, a senior leader of Oliโ€™s Commmunist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) told Reuters.

Police spokesperson Om โ€ŒAdhikari confirmed the detainment of โ€‹Mr. Oli and his Home Minister, Ramesh Lekhak.

Rapper-turned politician โ Balendra Shah was sworn โ in on Friday (March 27, 2026) as Prime Minister after โ€Œa winning the March 5 parliamentary elections.
