Nepalโs former Prime Minister, K.P. โSharma Oli, was taken โinto custody on Saturday โ(March 28, 2026) as police investigate whether โ he was negligent in failing to prevent dozens of โdeaths during Gen Z protests last September.

This โweek, a Nepali โpanel โ which investigated violence โ during the anti-corruption protests recommended that Mr. Oli, 74, be prosecuted for โfailing to โprevent the crackdown on the protests.
A total of 76 people were โkilled in two days โof unrest, which led to Mr. Oli resigning.
โThey โ took him from his residence this morning,โ Min โBahadur Shahi, a senior leader of Oliโs Commmunist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) told Reuters.

Police spokesperson Om โAdhikari confirmed the detainment of โMr. Oli and his Home Minister, Ramesh Lekhak.
