Defending champions East Bengal FC will begin their title defence on home soil as the ninth season of the Indian Women’s League (IWL) gets underway on Saturday, with former champions Gokulam Kerala FC also expected to mount a strong challenge.

Launched in 2017 by the All India Football Federation (AIFF), the IWL is India’s premier women’s club competition and has played a central role in strengthening the country’s football ecosystem. Over the years, the league has served as a key platform for national team players while also providing exposure to emerging talent across states and academies.

East Bengal clinched their maiden IWL title last season, becoming the third different champion in as many years. Odisha FC had lifted the trophy in the previous edition, ending Gokulam Kerala’s remarkable run of three consecutive titles between 2020 and 2023. However, Odisha FC suffered a dramatic reversal last season, becoming the first reigning champions in Indian top-flight football to be relegated in the following campaign.

The 2025–26 season will be contested by eight teams in a double round-robin format, split into two phases around the Asian Cup commitments of India’s senior and U20 women’s teams. Each side will play seven matches in the first phase from December 20 to January 9, with the second phase scheduled from April 20 to May 10.

East Bengal will aim to become only the second club to successfully defend an IWL title, while Gokulam Kerala will look to reclaim the crown and add a fourth championship to their record. Sribhumi FC, who exceeded expectations last season, will seek to build on their reputation as potential dark horses.

The league also welcomes newly promoted Garhwal United FC and Sesa Football Academy, both set to make their debut in India’s top-tier women’s competition. Their inclusion underlines the growing depth and geographical spread of women’s football in the country.

With the IWL continuing to shape India’s international talent pipeline and competitive structure, the new season promises closely fought matches and another compelling title race.
