Aiming high, compound archer Jyothi ready to pursue Olympic dream
For years, they stood on the fringes of the Olympic dream, watching other disciplines take the centre stage while their own hopes remained suspended in uncertainty. The inclusion of compound archery in the 2028 Olympics at Los Angeles has not just opened a door, it has unlocked a dream that generations of archers have carried quietly, stubbornly and passionately in their hearts.
ย
No one feels this more deeply than Jyothi Surekha Vennam, the pride of Andhra Pradesh and Indiaโs most decorated woman compound archer. She has everything an athlete could hope for, World Championship medals, a historic World Champion title, Asian Games golds and podium finishes across continents. Yet, one medal, the medal she has imagined since the earliest days of her career, was never within her grasp. Today, that dream has come alive again.
ย
Talking to News Arena India from Taipei, where she is competing at the World Indoor Championships, Jyothiโs voice carried both relief and emotion. โIt has been such a long waitโฆ truly long. All of us in compound archery are grateful to the International Olympic Committee for finally giving our event its rightful place at the Olympics.โ

For Jyothi, the announcement was not just news, it was the lifting of a weight she had carried for years. She remembered how the community held its breath last year, clinging to hope that 2028 would be their moment. โWe waited with bated breath when the discussions were on. Every single day, we hoped. When it didnโt happen, it hurtโฆ but we never let go of the dream,โ she said, her words reflecting the quiet resilience of an entire sport.
ย
Her achievements have been extraordinary. A rare hat-trick of gold medals in Shanghai in 2024, a feat matched only once before by Deepika Kumari. Jyothi smiled as she spoke of her senior teammate, โDeepika di has always been inspiring. Watching her come back so strongly reminds us that belief is everything.โ
ย
Jyothiโs journey began early โ a youth bronze in China, a silver at the World University Games and then her senior debut marked by an Asian Championship medal. Her rise was steady, powerful and destined. Yet, despite her overflowing trophy cabinet, one thought had been playing quietly in the back of her mind. โThe Olympicsโฆ everyone knows itโs the biggest dream. Winning a medal there would mean the world to me. Iโve won almost everything possible in compound archery, but the Olympics is something else, itโs magic.โ
ย
Now, as the Olympic pathway finally opens, Jyothi stands on the edge of a moment she has imagined for a lifetime, a moment that once seemed impossible. The wait is over. The dream is alive. And for Jyothi Surekha Vennam, the Olympic journey has finally begun.
