USย President Donald Trump on Thursday, 14 August, once again invoked his role, contribution and experience in resolving an Indiaโ€“Pakistan military standoff, warning that the situation at the time had reached the brink of nuclear conflict.

Talking to reporters Trump said, โ€œIf you look at Pakistan and India, that was โ€” planes were being knocked out of the air, six or seven planes came down,โ€ Trump told reporters. โ€œThey were ready to go, maybe nuclear. We solved that.โ€

The president’s statement at the White house came just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on India’s 79thย Independence Day.

Trump described the episode as one of several major international conflicts his administration addressed, noting that he โ€œsolved six of themโ€ in just over six months, including โ€œone war ragingโ€ฆ for 37 yearsโ€ and another in the Congo with Rwanda lasting 31 years.

Turning to the current war in Ukraine, Trump said, โ€œI thought this would be maybe an easier one. It never made sense, this war. It would have never happened when I was president. If I were president this war would have never happened.โ€
