Indian archers disappoint, lose five of seven finals
It was a disappointing finish for Indiaโs junior archers who could manage just two gold medals despite making it to seven of the 10 finals across recurve and compound disciplines. India concluded their Asia Cup Leg 2 campaign on Friday with nine medals, including two gold, six silver and one bronze as they struggled to buck the troubling trend of faltering when it matters the most.
ย
Most of the India shooters buckled under pressure with top seeds succumbing to lower-ranked opponents and arrows missing the mark by a long way. The results were particularly upsetting in recurve, where India could not secure a single gold. Recurve archers returned empty-handed except for two silver medals in team events.
ย
The top-seeded menโs team was no match for Japan in the final as Vishnu Choudhary, Paras Hooda and Juyel Sarkar failed to touch the 50-mark in two of the three sets, and lost in straight sets 6-0. The recurve mixed team final was no better as fourth-seeded Choudhary and Vaishnavi Pawar lost to Indonesia to settle for a sliver. The womenโs recurve team and individual recurve participants, on the other hand, could not even reach the medal rounds.
ย
Indiaโs performance in the compound section was, however, better. Had it not been for missed chances, the compound archers could have done even better. Top seed Kushal Dalal beat 22nd seed Joshua Manon of Australia in the menโs individual final, 149-143.
ย
Indian archers also won a compound bronze as 10th seed Sachin Chechi beat fourth-seed Himu Bachhar 148-146 in a close match. Indiaโs gold in the womenโs event was assured as it was an all-Indian affair, where second-seed Tejal Salve got past higher-ranked Shanmukhi Naga Sai Budde 146-144.
ย
The top-seeded menโs compound team, however, lost to third-seeded Kazakhstan 231-235. The womenโs compound team also lost in the shoot-off to lower-ranked Malaysia.
